Applied Sport Psychology


Often, the most overlooked component of a young player's development, the Psychological corner of a footballer's skill-set is largely considered one of the most critical determiners of Elite Performance.

As part of Sporting CT's commitment to offering our membership the best possible chance of success, we are happy to announce a formal partnership with Springfield College that sees an 8 week Mental Skills Training Program delivered to our U12-17 teams.

The Athletic Counsellors are on hand to provide practical based workshops educating our players on tips and techniques to aid their performance.

Topics include: Positive Self Talk, Mental Toughness, Goal Setting and Anxiety/Arousal Control.



In addition, any of our players who would like further insight and possible training into the use of Mental Skills can reach out to Academy Director Tom Shields for support and guidance.

Holding an MSc in Sport & Exercise Psychology from the renowned Carnegie Faculty of Education at Leeds Metropolitan University, England and experience of introducing Psychological Skills Training in Elite Development Programs in the U.K alongside his current role as Assistant Coach for the Women's Soccer Program at Central Connecticut State University, Tom is finely placed to offer highly valuable insight to how varying Psychological principles can help aid performance.
